The Brothertown Archaeological Project

University of Pennsylvania archaeologist Craig Cipolla is in the initial stages of planning an archaeological project centered on historic Brothertown sites.  He envisions this research as a community project, hopefully drawing the interests and participation of Brothertown community members, and landowners.  The Brothertown  Tribal Nation  fully supports these efforts.  The project’s primary goal is to locate, map, and explore early Brothertown sites, particularly those in need of preservation.  Potential sites of interest include Brothertown Indian homes and communal spaces such as the historic Grist Mill.  This process will have absolutely no impact on community member’s properties and will ensure that historic Brothertown sites are studied and/or preserved for the future.  The area of interest extends from the waterfront to just past HWY 151.

If you live in Brothertown and are interested in getting involved, your participation will be welcomed.  Also, if you own land in or around the area of interest described above, it would benefit the project greatly if you were to allow the archaeological team to work on it.

Craig Cipolla is happy to discuss exactly what this entails via email/mail, over the phone, or in person.

Finally, if you know of any potential Brothertown sites or if you’ve found any types of artifacts on your land (stones, glass, ceramics etc.) your input would be of great interest to the project in each of these cases, please feel free to contact Craig Cipolla at your leisure.
